Last versions

When your laptop sleeps, a reserved name keeps showing what visitors last saw. On Hobby and Pro.

How it works

On Hobby and Pro, while you share under one of your reserved names, ouicu keeps the last answer to each page and file your visitors loaded. When the share goes off, because your laptop sleeps or you press Ctrl-C, visitors get those instead of a page saying nothing is shared, with a small note in a corner:

The live preview is offline. This is its last version, from 3 Oct, 14:05.
  • Only what someone opened while the share ran is kept. Other pages say they aren't in the last version.
  • It sits behind the same password or invite list as the share it came from.
  • Live reload stays quiet: WebSockets and dev server pings are turned away, so the page doesn't reload over and over.
  • A live share, or a site uploaded under the name, always wins. Share again and visitors see the live one.
  • Shares with random names don't keep a last version.

What is never kept

Nothing personal. ouicu keeps only what any visitor would see, and leaves out:

  • pages and files sent with a visitor's cookies or login,
  • data a page fetches for itself, like an account or a basket, which is often someone's own,
  • answers that set a cookie, or are marked Cache-Control: private,
  • answers that change with more than how they are compressed, and anything but a plain successful GET.

To keep a page out of the last version, send it with Cache-Control: private. Each name keeps up to 100 MB and 2,000 answers of up to 10 MB each; past that, the oldest go first.

Take one down

  • On the Shares page, under Reserved names, press “Take down its last version”. Visitors then see that nothing is shared there, until you share under the name again.
  • Stopping a share from the dashboard or through the API takes its last version down too. Ctrl-C at the terminal doesn't: that is the case it's for.
  • Releasing the name, or leaving Hobby and Pro, takes it down as well.
